Heavy Duty Powershift

Heavy duty or long haul truck transmissions already have a relatively long application history of AMT technology. However, dual clutch technology or powershift technology is not introduced yet in this application field, nonetheless new developments in this area are eminent. DTI and DAF have developed a powershift system that can be applied to existing 12speed heavy duty AMTs. The Powershift system can perform seamless and uninterrupted shifting between the 11th and 12th gear and vice versa. This feature is combined with a long final drive ratio such the engine runs at extremely low revolutions per minute when at topspeed of 85 km/h. Such a low engine rpm saves up to 5% of fuel, which is a lot in the freight transport market where high fuel cost and low margins can be relaxed substantially if fuel consumption becomes lower. Running the engine at such low rpm usually deteriorates the driveability of the truck that needs to shift down from 12th to 11th gear much more frequently. With DTI’s heavy duty powershift system, the driver does not notice the up-and down shifting and thus completely neutralizes this driveability and performance deficit. In this way, fuel saving and retaining performance of the truck can go hand-in-hand.

Next to the first generation powershift modules, DTI is it currently developing some new and higher capability powershift structures for which improved truck manoeuvring and powershift capabilities in other gears are possible.
