Cost-effective DNR

Automatics including Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) have a forward drive, neutral and reverse drive selection system. In a CVT this is mostly configured as a planetary gearset, a wet clutch and a wet brake, which is packaged between the engine and the input shaft of the transmission. Although, this system is effective and robust, it takes up to 20% of the total transmission cost! DTI has developed an alternative DNR system that’s inspired by (automated) manual transmission technology. In the new DNR system, the output shaft of the transmission is connected either to a forward gear stage or through an additional idler gear, a reverse gear stage is established. Both simple gear stages are side-mounted to the transmission and therefore free space is realized by removing the traditional DNR set. This makes the transmission much more compact, low-cost and even more efficient because there is no wet brake continuously sliding at forward driving conditions.
The new DNR set can be used for any type of (automotive) CVT, that is pulley-type, toroidal-type and cone-type CVTs.
